Serene Eco Village

About Serene

Serene Eco Village is a sustainable community dedicated to eco-friendly living, reforestation, and holistic well-being. Nestled in the Sahyadri mountains, it offers a serene space where nature and conscious living come together for a harmonious lifestyle.

The quality of our lives is constantly being degraded by increased air pollution, climate change, rising sea levels, soil erosion, animal extinction due to disrupted natural ecosystems and chemically poisoned food sources. Traditional urban living has become a wasteful consumerist lifestyle with the destruction of natural habitats, urban sprawl, factory farming and over-reliance on fossil fuels. These are trends that must be changed to avert ecological disaster.

Serene Eco Village is an answer to the modern-day problems that are plaguing us. The idea was to lead by example and thereby inspire and empower people to inculcate holistic habits in their lifestyles. Placed in the green laps of the Sahyadri range, the community strives to create a supportive social environment by integrating natural farming practices, alternative energy generation, sustainable living, green production and so much more.

Serene Eco Village is not just a space for us but a beautiful feeling and an extension of ourselves. As the name suggests, it fills serenity in one’s bones and being. The moment you enter the space, you will be welcomed with huge green trees and calmness that will touch your soul.

The melodious sounds of the innumerable birds will bring you close to the music within your hearts. The enchanting earthy smell of the soil will warmly embrace you. We assure you that a part of you will stay here and a part of the space will stay in your heart forever.

Dr. Pravin Chordia (MBBS, MS) is a visionary and could very well see where we as an urban community were headed in the name of growth. He bought this barren land of Serene in the year 2000. The idea was to move towards a tree-based economy as India was originally.

Dr. Pravin Chordia and his family started reforestation in 2001 by planting some 2,50,000 trees. Some saplings were lost to grazing and fires but this did not dishearten the family and they did not budge from their mission. They planted more trees.

More than 50, 000 trees make up the 45 acres of reforested land and it is still growing. Some wildlife co-owners have also found their way to the land.

For a long time, Serene was only a family project but then the family decided to open it up to the public as an eco-tourism spot and share the benefits of being amidst Nature with more people.

Living In Harmony With Nature

Today, various practices are undertaken at Serene Eco Village to form an efficient commune and system to incur minimum burden on Mother Nature. Those includes:

Organic Farming

Our primary focus is Reforestation but we like to grow some of our food too. We have around 40+ veggies,30+ plus herbs and 20+ fruits which are grown naturally and organically. People who come to Serene, join us in the gardening and the produce from these gardens are used in our kitchen for all our delicious fresh meals.

Water Management

We have rainwater harvesting systems installed on the campus to ensure using the harvested water (around 7 lakh litres) for our daily chores during the monsoon. This enables us to use less fuel and other energy to draw water from the water body and thereby make water easily available for our plants and trees.

Waste Management

We try to keep Serene as a plastic-free zone. We provide eco-friendly products for daily chores like washing and bathing. Yet whatever plastic finds its way to the campus is reused. The wet waste is provided as fodder for the cows or is composted as manure.

Eco-Sustainable Houses

The different materials used for construction are laterite bricks, hand-cut stones carved by traditional local masons available in the region, mud, wood, bamboo and structures like the geodesic dome. They are cool in summers and warm in winters.

Herbal Plant Nursery

Are you suffering from some illness? Let us know and we will open our pandora box of “Dadimaa ke nuske” and help you heal. We have a plant nursery that has various medicinal herbs. The nursery is nourished and maintained by the local villagers here.
